Review: The Jockey Inn, Baughton

After reopening early last year after a lengthy refurbishment I have been keen to visit The Jockey and it didn’t disappoint. The Jockey closed several years ago and since lay empty until the current owners spent three years renovating the place, into a trendy, relaxed destination pub.

A few months ago we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner out, it was a Saturday night and it was all a bit last minute so I called round all the local places where I enjoy to find they were fully booked before my mum suggested I try The Jockey, By this point I had half given up on the idea of eating out but I was advised that the only time they could do a table was 9pm, it seemed a bit late if I’m honest, I was pretty tired and had been at work all day but thought we would give it a go and it did not disappoint. We have since visited a few times and now we live in Upton it is even easier to get too so I am sure there will be a few more visits soon.

The food is brilliant, nothing too pretentious but nonetheless great quality and beautifully cooked. On all of our visits we have been with a table of people and no one has ever felt disappointed with their visit.

On our first visit I opted for the fillet steak with sweet potatoes fries that was cooked exactly to my liking. I tend to only opt for steak when eating out and I find it so disappointing when you get a rubbish steak that is tough and overcooked, this was far from that it was cooked exactly how I liked it and this wasn’t just a one off every time we have visited my boyfriend has ordered steak and each time he has been thrilled with it.

As for dessert they do a fantastic “seven deadly sins” sharing platter, which includes seven small portions of their desserts including sticky toffee pudding, chocoholic cheesecake and burnt fig, caramel & honeycomb ice cream. Quite often it gets to pudding and I want one but don’t thin I can manage it but sharing this between the table allows us to have that something sweet that we are craving without feeling like we have overdone it on the pudding front.

The icing on the cake for me though is their fantastic cocktail menu; every time I visit I try to give as many of the cocktails ago… I don’t get very far but I like to give a few of them a try. Even the “driver’s cocktails” are good; a particular favourite of mine is the fish bowl.

The Jockey offers great food, in a relaxed atmosphere with friendly service.

If you fancy a trip to The Jockey here is the details, its best to book well ahead, we were really lucky on our first visit to get a table at short notice.
