Do something that scares me

To celebrate my 29th birthday, I extended my birthday celebrations into a whole week, not sure how I will top it next year. We spent three days in Newquay Cornwall having a little break. We stayed at Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa, which was lovely, we decided to upgrade to a sea view room and it did not disappoint. If you happen to be in Newquay and looking for somewhere to stay I would definitely recommend this hotel, especially as the spa facilities are an added bonus at hotel in such a great location. It really is worth the extra for a sea view!
With my list at the ready and a trip to Fistral beach in progress it seemed a shame not to embrace the beach, especially as it’s one of the best surf beaches in the UK…
On our second morning we woke up not really sure what to do. After some debate I announced that I wanted to hit the waves and try body boarding. This came to Craig as somewhat of a shock, particularly as I tend to avoid anything in open water. We might live right next to the river but you won’t find me bobbing along the Severn anytime soon. I blame my mum for this phobia, as children she was known to tell us horror stories of things living in the water and rats pee, this led me to hate open water but more so water that dark murky water, like that which surrounds my house. Luckily the sea at Fistral beach was really clear, I couldn’t actually believe how clear so I was much less dubious.
We headed down to the beach and hired wetsuits and boards, I hired a body board and Craig had a surfboard. I have to admit I was dubious at first but as soon as I got in the water I was having so much fun. About an hour in, I tried Craig’s surfboard and that was it I was hooked, the body board was gone and I was a surfer for the rest of the day. I even managed to ride some waves, I couldn’t quite stand up but I was so close. We spent all day in the water apart from a short lunch break, I could of kept going but the wetsuits and boards had to be returned.
If you have ever thought about trying surfing, give it a go. I was totally scared of the idea of being in open water like that but we had so much fun. We didn’t have a lesson, as I wasn’t sure I would even make it in to the water but next time we will definitely get some lessons booked, I need to get stood up next time.
